Honey is Sweet

Catching up - 2008-01-17

I'm grateful for: not having to make drastic changes in my diet; more books (from D2); a relatively quiet day.

Where have I been? Monday was an extremely full day as expected. Tuesday was more than we could ever have guessed.

The dud shemesh (solar water heater) froze -- along with almost every other on the moshav, many on the next moshav, and a good percentage of them in Netivot. The temperatures dropped below freezing here. This is absolutely unprecedented. What it means is the water froze in the dud (pronounced 'dude'), and since they were all installed at the same time in 1970's, every single one of them popped the same cap. ;-7 What can you do?

Apparently on the television Monday night they had given warnings to people to turn off the water to the dud shemesh, and then leave the water running (to drain the pipes), but we weren't home, and obviously most other people didn't see it/weren't watching television. Having lived pretty much all of our lives in the north (Chicago before New England), it's not that we don't know how to deal with cold. It just has never frozen here before.

So, instead of bombing out to the J'lem zoo, picking up the kids, and having an otherwise normal day, TH spend the morning and part of the afternoon on the phone, driving into Netivot (to replace the broken cap, which is how we found out how widespread this was), arguing with the landlord, talking with the neighbours, and generally caught up in the whole balagan (mess).

That meant I had to drive to J'lem myself with a late start. S2 came with me. It was a nightmare. We missed our exit and had to drive across the city which if you haven't driven through J'lem you can't imagine. The city was not designed for cars. The bright side was that I actually walked part of the way across the zoo. I stopped by the kangaroos, which was as far as I could get really, S2 went and got the kids, S3 and D3, and we left. The leaving J'lem was almost as bad - minus having to drive all the way across the city, though. Rush hour traffic, and I took one wrong turn but that was actually quickly fixed (unusual). We stopped for supper at a kenyone (mall) we saw from the highway, and were actually able to drive to easily, and got home around 8pm. I still managed to sit on the exercise bike, so the day wasn't a total waste...

It froze again Tuesday night. The end result of TH's many phonecalls and conferences is that the landlord's son the rabbi (he happens to be a rabbi, not our rabbi) said that he (the landlord's son) would take care of the dud shemesh. Results? We still haven't got it fixed/replaced. Just for the record.

Yesterday TH was supposed to go to work in Petakh Tikvah, but he had more headaches with the dud shemesh;, and ended up tying off both the water in and water out hoses, effectively cutting it out of the system. We still have the electric dud (dud hashmal) so we can have hot water, but it's a cloodge, and not a good one.

Instead of going to work, he drove up to Petakh Tikvah and did some shopping, and took D2 out for some father-daughter time. It sounds like they had a great time. D2 is looking for a place to live, NOT with the family she works for. She'll still work there, but only 9-2, whereas while she lives there she is basically always 'on,' despite promises to the contrary. She has another job in the afternoons/evenings, which is also technically part-time, being about 30 hours a week. But also a 'real' job, which she could work at full-time if she wasn't also working as a metapelet (helper).

I spent the day in bed, due in large part to having completely run the body down in the drive to and from Jerusalem, and in part because I forgot to take some antibiotics the night before. *sigh* I forgot again last night, too.

I had an appointment with a nutritionist/naturopath for 6pm, so TH got home to turn around and drive out again. The dr. approved my basic diet, telling me I shouldn't eat dairy in the winter, shouldn't eat meat after 7pm, and should eat raw vegetables in the afternoon and cooked veggies in the evening. Which means no veggies in the evening, as TH has no concept of how to cook a vegetable besides a potato.

On getting home I was able to exercise again. Yippee! And late in the evening S1 phoned from the U.S., from a bus station, and says he wants to come back here, to Israel, he wants to come home.

Without going into all the details, it was a slightly stressful evening, I didn't get to sleep until after 1am, or maybe after 2am,

As of 8:30 this morning, our time, S1 is settled with RS, and apparently happy enough for the moment. RS is going to visit our mother this weekend (a glutton for punishment?), so S1 will stay at her place alone, afterwards we'll figure out when and how they can collect his stuff from D1's place, and get him to the airport.

So I'm here, in bed because I again forgot to take the anitbiotics last night. I'll be okay, I took them this morning, but now have to lie in bed for a while. Today is supposed to be stress-free except for the grocery shopping. S2 has a driving lesson, and other than that there's nothing in particular going on. In theory, D2 and the family she lives with will be coming to visit for shabbos. We'll see what happens, as I haven't heard anything at all.

Well, that's the update. I'm exhausted, reasonably happy, trying not to stress about money (of course), and generally doing okay. Oy, and bleeding. The rofeh nashim (women's dr.) says we'll see how this goes, and if the bleeding is so bad as before, then it's the hysterectomy.

I'm going to try and actually respond to a few emails / notes, and answer some questions, so thanks for patience. Be well, and Gd bless.

I'm listening to S3 playing
